Grass, clods, stumps, and large stones should all be removed from the earth since they can interfere with the appropriate hand or mechanical compaction of soil. It is important to make sure that there are no “Kallar” or alkaline materials on Earth. Layers of 20 cm should be used when laying earthen works. After watering, all lumps should be broken up and the layers should be compressed with a “Hand Rammer.”

Precautions during Earth Filling
- When filling up the dirt around brick masonry in a foundation, the following safety measures need to be followed.
- Debris, brick bats, and other objects should be removed from the area surrounding the foundation and trench drains.
- Fillings should be applied in layers no deeper than 20 cm.
- It is necessary to moisten, ram, and consolidate each layer.
- When feasible, ramming should be done with an iron “rammer” or, in the event that the Rammer is not usable, using the blunt end of “crow bars.”
- Extra caution needs to be utilized to make sure that the concrete, masonry, and drains are not harmed.
